Proseminar

Proseminar Information Fall 2010

Congratulations on being accepted into the PR major! This fall it is your responsibility to enroll in Proseminar and earn 10 points throughout the semester. Here are some of the opportunities you will have for points:

  • FPRA student chapter meeting………………………………….……1 pt.
  • Communication club meeting (e.g. Ad Club)…………………….1 pt.
  • Capital Chapter luncheon………………………………………………1 pts.
  • A professional networking/learning event………………………1 pts.
  • Semester away trip…………………………………………..…………..5 pts.

Seven student chapter meetings will be held this semester. Therefore you will need to attend more than just FPRA, or attend the trip, to meet the 10 point requirement. When you do attend an outside event, please provide proof, such as a brochure.

Attendance is taken at every meeting to keep track of points. Every PR student will be able to check their attendance with the Secretary.

PUR3930 Gilmers’ Proseminar Handout

Public relations majors must register for the Proseminar during their first semester after admission to the major.  The easiest and perhaps best way to meet this requirement is to take an active part in the Tallahassee Student Chapter of the Florida Public Relations Association, which meets every two weeks in Diffenbaugh.  Many students also take part in WICI.  You are also invited to the monthly meeting of the Capital Chapter of FPRA.  We meet at noon.  You may come for free if you just want to hear the speakers, but you are also welcome to pay for your lunch and eat with us.

Even though PR majors register for the Proseminar only once, the faculty expects majors to remain active in one or more of these organizations until graduation and beyond.  Both the Capital Chapter and WICI have monthly meetings.  FPRA holds a state conference each July/August.  There is a special registration fee for students.

To receive credit, you must:
(1)  Attend ten (10) substantive sessions of one or more of the organizations listed above.  Keep a written record of each meeting you attend, noting the date, speaker, and subject.  This journal must be submitted with your final report.  Special guest lectures in classes in which you are NOT registered also count as do other types of professional seminars, workshops, etc., where you “learn” about public relations.
(2)  Write news releases or reports totaling 1000 words on one or more of the meetings attended.  Reports must be in proper form, carefully written, and proofread.  Four double spaced typed pages will satisfy this part of the requirement.

DO NOT register twice or more for proseminar.  If you do not complete the ten meetings, you will receive an incomplete.  When you have completed your assignments, turn them in to me.

This is due the last day of CLASS in the semester in which you enroll, or whenever it is done the next semester.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask at our bi-weekly FPRA student meetings or post a question on this blog.

Hi, I am currently a junior at FSU majoring in Editing and Writing for the Media and minoring in Public Relations. I am doing an internship at a PR firm in Miami this summer but when I go back to Tallahassee I want to keep myself involved in the public relations world. I was hoping to join this group but I am a little unsure how to go about that. If anyone on the executive board could help me out, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks!

You can always check back here on the blog for updated information or email fprastudent@gmail.com (for an immediate response). Hope to see you in September–enjoy your internship! 🙂
